The Personalized TV Environment
The vision of Personalized Content Services
Video will always be one of the primary forms of entertainment and communication. It joins the wide-spread voice services and data services to create the Triple Play: a new concept of services that combine voice, data and video.
Encouraged by the high penetration of digital television and video-enabled mobile devices on the one hand and deregulation of the telecommunications market one the other hand, Telco, Cellular, Cable and Broadband operators seek to offer Triple Play services to their customers. These operators will become Multi Service Operators (MSOs) that distribute multiple content types through different channels over all kinds of devices.
For the end user, the convergence of the Wired and Wireless worlds will bring a dramatic change in the way he/she consumes video content. This end user will have a single subscription to both the cellular and fixed services and will receive service over the Wired network (Cable or xDSL) in the same way he/she is used to receive them in the cellular network. Namely, the video content will be personalized: given according to what the customer wants, at the time he/she wishes to get it and adapted to the device and network used.
Tremendous amount of content is available in digital format, including: News, Movies and Movie trailers, Entertainment programs, Sports events, Educational content, Conferences and lectures , Research materials
The content may come from multiple sources such as : Broadcasted TV content (a.k.a. Linear video) , Video on demand catalogues (a.k.a. non-linear video) , User-generated video on the WEB, Private video libraries (free or subscription based), Public / commercial video libraries (free or subscription based)
Users will be able to access any video content, at any time, from any location or device. Personal Content Services will deliver content to a multiple users concurrently, to meet their needs in the most effective and efficient ways.
Industry experts consider personalized services to be a long term trend, which is expected to rise, as customers become more sophisticated and demanding, and they are willing to pay extra money for value added innovative applications.
Today, the Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) can record and play back television programs and store the programs in digital form. It allows watching live or recorded program on request, to pause, rewind, stop, or fast-forward a recorded program. With personal content services this non-linear video experience will be much expanded to a wider variety of content sources over multiple devices and networks.
Personalization will allow operators to “know” their customers and to offer to them content according to their tastes and their current location. In addition, based on the customer’s purchases profile, operators will be able to distribute personalized advertising and content.
